rating: 5 of 5 stars Part two/book two..depending on which version you read....um LOVED this book. I have to say it's really better compared to the first book (Crown Duel). I love the mystery of the (love?) letters/gifts (and hoping that they were from a certain someone). Loved the uncertainty of who we should trust and what people's agendas really were. It's pretty much a love story (certainly not like the first part/book one). I also love that these books are clean and I don't think they have any bad words in them. The only thing that kind of stunk about this book was that they killed 2 guys I really don't think they should have! Too bad the second part/second book won't really make that much sense unless you read the first book. But to summarize what this book is about: the marquis is headed to be king but there's this other marquise and possibly some others who would like to be ruler of the country. The main character Meliara is determined to make sure the right person rules the country...but who is the right person??

Court Duel by Sherwood Smith
City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare
City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare
Spoiler Alert!!!
rating: 4 of 5 stars
Pretty good second book. I felt like I was kind of reading lots of descriptions of things in the book though. I like it better when people are talking...but still it was a great book. I'm not accepting that Jace and Clary are actually brothers and sisters. No, I will not believe that. I bet Jace is really Michael Wayland's son and Valentine killed his own son that one day that he killed his in-laws. That's what I think could have happened.
And I'm confused as to how Valentine did any "experiments" on Clary when I don't even think he knew that his wife was pregnant with her. So maybe one of his experiments was actually killing the real Jace and raising Michael Wayland's son as if he was his own. ????? Guess we'll have to wait for the third book!

Fire Study by Maria Snyder
I took a big break in reading this book. At page 200 it got a lot better. Interesting story still. Lots of things seem unexpected. It was kind of annoying with Valek and Yelena. Seemed like they had sex a lot (although I don't think it explicitly says so.) But I didn't care for parts leading up to that and after...so it was kind of annoying the author wrote all that in. I could have done without it.) But I will say the whole series is an unusual story. But I am also glad I'm finally done reading the book.
That was my review for it on goodreads. Now I'm not sure how much I like the series overall. It's definitely an interesting series. Way different. But at the same time, she could have made the books better by omitting some things.
City of Bones by Cassandra Clare
Picture of book omitted because I don't really like it.
Anways...my review...well I mostly liked this book. It's a book about Shadowhunters (special people who's duty is to kill demons or something like that.) (There's also vampires, werewolves, warlocks, etc...)and the main character is a girl named Clary who doesn't know her heritage really and thus the story continues. At the end it kind of gets weird. People may not like the book in the end because of it. But I'm convinced that what happens at the end can't really be true. Which maybe by book 3 (which comes out next year) will show that my thought was true.
I gave it 4 stars. It's so weird at the end. The next book is weird too. But I still enjoy reading it. As my friend said, it's a very unusual love story. And I would totally agree.

Crown Duel by Sherwood Smith
3 stars....although that could be because I was tired while reading some of it...which could definitely distort my opinion. And it took me a long time to finish the book, not necessarily because I didn't like it that much...but I think I might have worn myself out previously.
Anyway....
Get through about the first 45 pages and it will get better! I was kind of hesitant about finishing the book, but because it had such great ratings, I decided to do it. And the book does get better. Something exciting-ish is kind of constantly happening afterwards.
There's a great heroine in the book. There's not really a people love story at all(although I think the second book in the series is more of it). It's somewhat a fantasy book, but the book itself doesn't really revolve around it though...not really. I mean the protag is not magical, and the people she's fighting isn't...(actually it is so hardly a fantasy novel. Hardly!)
But it's a good story about two seemingly nonthreatening count and countess who's mission is to fight the king and protect the Covenant (with the people who are magical) and their own people of Tlanth.
It's not a very popular book, but it is a good one. Amazon has great ratings for the book. 5 stars from like over 250 ratings. That's not shabby. There's a different version that has the 1st and 2nd books combined, which I would probably suggest.
Book of a Thousand Days by Shannon Hale
3 Stars. I liked this book. The beginning and ending were good. Well, I actually skimmed through the end parts mostly. I enjoyed The Goose Girl more. There wasn't much action in the book, so I guess it went a bit slow for me.

The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale
4 stars.
I'm really enjoying Shannon Hale's books. I've only read three so far-Austenland, Princess Academy, and now The Goose Girl. But I think Shannon is a great storyteller/re-storyteller. It was a cute/great story and I'm sure I'll reread the book again some time.
I enjoyed the protagonist and her growth throughout the book to become a courageous girl. I really enjoyed the ending and was trying to figure out what the whole story was with Geric until it was written at the end.
I see that the next two books in this "series" isn't really about Ani, which I'm kind of bummed about. But I guess I'll give them a try of course.
Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine
Great book. 4 stars.
I've seen the movie and liked it, but it's also kind of different from the book, if I remember correctly. I think I like the book better. The ending was great and I'm glad I'm not cursed like she was. To have to be obedient to everyone who commanded it would be horrible. It's a cinderella story, but better. I think I read on Levine's website something like that it's a cinderella story, but cinderella, aka Ella, isn't really such a naturally good person. She is forced into obeying and can be quite rebellious. Which I think that is what probably makes her character more interesting than the old Cinderella.

Princess Academy by Shannon Hale
I rated this book 4 stars!
This book has been waiting for me to read it for quite some time. I finally picked it up last night and finished it today.
I really liked the book and the book ended great, even though I had mixed feelings about what I wanted the ending to be. But I'm glad the author ended it well. Great story and I'd recommend it to my friends.

Poison Study and Magic Study by Maria V. Snyder
Oh my gosh these were some great novels. There's supposed to be 4 novels in this series, 3 are currently published. I started reading the first one for a book club thing and it was hard to put down.
It's about this girl Yelena, who has killed this one leader's son, is waiting for execution. Because of the code, she is offered the position as food taster to the Commander (the big leader of all the different districts.) As food taster, she must taste the commander's food before each meal to make sure there are no poisons in it. She herself has been poisoned by the commander's advisor and must receive a daily antidote so she does not die. This prevents her from fleeing and becoming a free person. She also discovers her magic abilities, abilities which are unacceptable in their country--an ability which if discovered usually leads to the magician's death.
This is quite an original story and I am so hooked. (I don't know how I will last waiting for the third book to become available to me from the library.) It does contain some torture though, murder, and some swear words, for those who don't handle either well. But it's easy to skip over. I skipped over some parts in the book due to my sensitivity.
I was quite upset in the second book she added one line that I definitely could have done without, but overall the book was excellent...I could hardly put it down. In both books I skipped over parts I knew I wouldn't like. But the book really is so addicting. It's like no other book!
Despite the fact that some subjects aren't especially to my liking, I want to say that this series is my new favorite at the moment. I've become obsessed with it and I've decided that for Halloween this year I'm going to be Yelena. She is so awesome.

Movie Review: Cloverfield
Wow, that was a DUMB movie. It's hard to get over how dumb dumb dumb that movie was. What a waste of my time. I mean seriously, have you seen it. DUMB DUMB DUMB. The movie was so stupid!

Mister Monday by Garth Nix
I rated it 3 stars.
Hmm, another series that I wanted to like, but I'm not quite sure. I have mixed feelings about this book. I would almost rate it a 2.5.
After reading it, I'm not quite sure I really like the protagonist either. Maybe he's just not that believable. Or maybe I just wanted him to act differently sometimes.
I'm also unsure whether I like the book or not because it seems to somewhat try to mirror the creation in a sense and it says straightforwardly that there is no life after death (which I don't believe). Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but either he's taking his knowledge of God and other worlds and putting his own spin on it, or perhaps he's somewhat mocking religion. Or maybe neither and I'm, like I said, reading too much into it.
But I must say the ending ended up being good. Just before the ending parts, though, I really didn't know if I wanted to continue the series. It just wasn't that special. But the author did do a good job of making you want to read the next book. We'll see if I do.

Re: Diana Wynne Jones
Not as "good" of an author as I thought she would be. I think Howl's Moving Castle is probably the best writing she did. I have read some of her other books (the sequels to Howl's Moving Castle) and they were a big disappointment. The writing, I felt, in her other books was mediocure and the story line flat.
I guess you win some, you lose some...this was a lost.
Over Sea, Under Stone By Susan Cooper
The characters were quite annoying at first (their naiveness was driving me crazy) but eventually, I grew to love them. The ending was also a bit disappointing. The whole story was built up around finding this one object and then the end just kind of left it open...I'm assuming this is because I'm going to learn more about it in the latter books so I can't be too judgemental...but it was annoying nonetheless.
A good read. Not too long but a little tedious to follow. My opinions about the ending and the story may change and I read the sequels so stay tuned!
Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones
I rated it 4 stars...only because....(keep reading).
This book is a bit different from the movie. I thought the movie was great. And I thought this book was excellent as well! The movie is quite a condensed and changed version of the book. I understood much more about the story from reading this book. The only reason why I might have given it only 4 stars is that I just wanted more from Howl and Sophie at the end. More dialogue between them in the last couple pages. I also did enjoy some of Howl's funny comments to Sophie....Mrs. Nose.
*-----Possible spoiler if you haven't watched the movie-----*
The ending was fantastic. But, I want to learn more about Howl's love for Sophie and how it grew or came about....how it developed and when exactly. Hmph. Maybe I'd have to read it over again to catch onto some clues, but I wish the book would have elaborated on it in the end.

Magic Lessons by Justine Larbalestier
I rate it 2 stars.
***This review contains spoilers!***
I didn't like this book as much as the first (which I thought was 4 stars!). I didn't even completely read this one. I skimmed through the last few chapters just to find out what happened. It was kind of a weird book. Some parts I had to skip over just because I thought some of it was inappropriate and wasn't quite for me... Okay, so this girl who's 15 has sex with this 18 year old which came to happen because she wanted to kiss this boy and she'd never kissed anyone before and was somewhat afraid she was going to die and never kiss someone (I think that was what happened.). So how is that teaching kids the right thing to do? I believe sex before marriage is inappropriate...even if you are dying! (I'm sure it probably wasn't a graphic detail (I skipped over this part so I can't be sure)).
Perhaps the third book of the series will close the book nicely and add some morals to it.
Also, it seemed to take forever to get to the whole point of the book. It was like I'm waiting and waiting for the big reveal...and then it's just weird at the end (although again, I didn't completely read it all...lots of skimming, so that could be why...well, no, it was weird.). I'll probably read the third book because I'm curious though. I mean, probably the only reason I didn't like this book was some improper scenes. I like the characters though. And I think Justine's take on magic is an unusual one and that makes it more interesting.
I really wanted to like this series, but this second book was not up to par. And it perhaps made me not want to recommend this book...or rather series, to anyone. Sad.
Oh, but it did kind of scare me. I was kind of scared reading the book. Haha. What a wuss.

Magic or Madness by Justine Larbalestier
I rated it 4 stars.
At first I didn't know if I would like this book that much. I was interested in it because the author is Scott Westerfeld's wife...I think Scott is great, but I just wasn't too confident I would like his wife's book..I mean they aren't as known as Scott's.
Well, I enjoyed this book. It kept me reading and I finished it pretty quickly. The book does take on different points of views, but that didn't really bother me as it might some. The main character is a mathy person. Kind of reminds me of Dess from Scott's Midnighter's series.
During the book, you may be kept guessing for a little bit whether characters are the good guys, the bad guys, or even maybe a little of both.
It's a pretty cool book.
Although, it does have a some bad words in it..just to warn you. (It's not overwhelming like some books may be though. Just here and there...not like 5 times a page! FYI.)

Airman by Eoin Colfer
I rated it 4 stars...although maybe it should have been a 5! I listened to it on CDs, which I guess can either help or hurt a book. And it's not that it really hurt the book because it was bad...it was a good CD! The reader was good. And I even found myself thinking I was talking like him today. If I had read the book, I'm sure I would have loved it even more....but I think that might be because I just like reading and I got distracted while listening.
It was a good book. One that I wouldn't mind having in my own library.
The book is about a boy who's friends with the princess and his father is good friends and protector (ish) of the King. (See, you don't get the full effect sometimes when you only listen to CDs....I can't even remember what his real title was.) Well there's this marshall who's a bad guy and he kills the king and puts Conner (the boy) in prison for reasons told in the book...
UM OK, it's going to take a while to explain the story...and I don't want to ruin it....so just read the book for yourself. You will like it! And I've read another review on it...perhaps from Amazon, that said something like if you tried to read the Artemis Fowl books and didn't like it, give Eoin Colfer a chance and read Airman...you'll like it.
It's got action...a smidge of a love story (although I guess the whole thing could be a love story about a boy who is in love with trying to make a flying machine...a love of his family...a love of his princess...but it's also a story of hate...a hate of some of the bad people.
Oh, and it looks like he left room for a sequel if he chooses.
Sorry I'm not as good a reviewer as Pricky.

re: Pricky's post about movies.
First off, that was rather civil of you Pricky.
Second, I rather enjoy books being made into movies even if they are not up to par. It's just "one" person's view on the book and that's cool with me. Movies also sometimes helps me understand books better when I sometimes didn't fully grasp parts of it.
A new book in production is Twilight. At first I was a little hesitant about Robert as Edward, but after seeing all the stuff from the Twilight Lexicon about him, such as the pictures people had taken with him or just of him, he's looking better for the part. And his personality...at least that being portrayed at the time, seems to fit Edward. (Pricky, hold your tongue please.) I think it will end up being a great movie. Not everyone may look the exact part, but I think it's still enjoyable to watch someone's view on how they see the book.
But then again...Pride and Prejudice A&E version I didn't think was as great...but there are plenty of people who love that one better than the newer version. And that's fine...(because obviously they're wrong and we all know it...lol) but not everyone's going to like it. Just like how not everyone loves the Twilight book (shocking!), not everyone's going to like the movie.
And I can't believe Pricky hasn't seen any of the Harry Potter movies!
I agree!
Sorry I've been sort of a bit absent from this blog.
The other day (perhaps it was yesterday) I went to Target and I overheard two girls talking about underwear. One said that this one pair ( of underwear!!!)wouldn't even be able to fit under most her shorts. (Or something like that.) Um, excuse me! How unbelievable short are her shorts! Goodness. First of all, modest is hottest...and much more tasteful. It disturbs me to see girls in immodest clothing. Like seriously!
So I agree with Pricky's post about the bikinis on little toddlers.
Uglies, Pretties, Specials...Now Extras...
I just finished reading the latest installment to the Uglies "trilogy," Extras by Scott Westerfeld.
If you have read the first 3, you really should read Extras just to "finish" off the series but truth be told, I was a bit disappointed. At first I couldn't really follow the beginning of the story; infact, I didn't even realize that the story took place in Japan until almost half-way. Although the story started off slowly and confusing, it did pick up pace and I found myself enjoying most of the story until....it came to the climax of the story. I won't tell you what happened but I felt like the author did one of those "...character has all these adventures only to find out it was a dream" scenario. The outcome of the climax was really disappointing...almost as if the author was just too tired to think of anything else. I'm sorry to say this, but the end was just totally "brain-missing." And Scott must have some issue with dishonesty or manipulation because this whole series has centered around these girls who have some issue that they just can't get over, and it's really annoying.
Anyways, read it...but don't hold it to the same standard as the first 3.
Little Girls should not be wearing bikinis...
Does anyone else have a problem with this or is it just me? At swim class I've been noticing more and more how mommies have been putting 2 pieces on these little girls at swim class. It has really been upseting me. First off, the girls don't even have breasts so this little bikini top keep sliding off or riding up all the way to their neck. Secondly, it makes these little girls look kind of trashy. I mean what kind of message are these mom's sending??? That it's okay to look immodest and show off your body? As these girls get older what's to stop them from showing off more skin?....And you wonder why so many teenagers are promiscuous....I'm telling ya, it all starts when their young.....Arghhh....

Why Books Should Never Be Made Into Movies...
I am a little hesitant to make this post because of the usual public excitement over popular books being made into movies. But I just have to vent out my frustration somewhere and unfortunately, this is the most convenient place since Sudapop is tired of hearing my complaints. So be forewarned!
Don't get me wrong. I love watching a good movie. I just have a problem when someone else in the filming hierarchy decides how a character or scene from a book is supposed to look like or act like. When I read a book, there are images of characters and events that I imagine in my head that are my own that are somehow robbed by the film industry when they make a film from my book.
Take for instance, Harry Potter: one of my favorite books of all time. Of course, I didn't watch the movie but now everytime I read it, who pops into my head as Ron? Rupert Grint! And Rubert does not even look like Ron in my head but now my imaginary Ron has been replaced by Rupert! And what about LOTR? Do I want to forever have Elijah Wood cemented in my mind as Frodo? And now with a popular book being turned into a movie, I am worried I will have my perfect image of my hero and heroine replaced by two actors that hold my interest for about 2 seconds before I grimace in pain.
Look: I can understand the excitement from the fans and from the authors of these books. I once asked Eoin Colfer why he was making Artemis Fowl into a movie. His reply was, "Who doesn't want to watch a story that you wrote with your sons and have them think 'my dad is cool'?" So I totally get it. I just get really bummed out that my imaginary characters and images are being x-ed out or controlled by someone else. Unfortunately, my brain is not wired to lock those images in place....Maybe I should just go get some surge....Tally?

Story Time by Edward Bloor
I rated it 2 stars. Although I think it should be like a 1.5 star.
First off, after reading this book after finishing Northanger Abbey, the writing style is just a bit inferior. It was in the teen section of our library, but perhaps writing-style wise it should be a children's book. The beginning of the book was enjoyable, but then towards the middle where you find out that there is a demon that comes out from a scanner into other books and can posses humans....it kind of went downhill from there. I had to skip some parts because I just wanted the book over with. I would have to say at least Inheart made better sense how certain readers could read characters out of books...that was at least more believable than Story Time. It just wasn't really that believable a book, as believable as fantasy books can be....
Basically, don't read this book. It was a waste of time overall.
Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen
I rated this 3 stars.
I'll admit, this is my first Austen book I've finished. And I actually really enjoyed it (haha isn't that what I kinda say about every book I read.). I really loved the first part of the book and found it kind of funny in a way. The characters she creates could be so real. I enjoyed Catherine's obliviousness and her silly suspicions based on the books she read.
One reason why I only gave it 3 stars is because after maybe 2/3 of the way through the book, it got a bit slow. The feel of the book changed a bit, into a bit more gothic novel or just boring. I think it may have ended a bit abruptly as well and perhaps I wanted to know more of the story at the end.
If you do end up watching the movie Northanger Abbey, do not watch the old one (BBC), watch the one from 2007. I'm sorry but the old movie's Catherine is just not good enough and Henry is too creepyish looking.

The Host by Stephenie Meyer: Pricky's Perspective
First a warning: The Host is nothing like the Twilight series. I love the Twilight series and naturally, started reading The Host with the same expectations as Twilight: the overwhelming emotions, the anticipations, the love triangle, etc...
First off, the summary at the back of the book is a little misleading. I felt like the book was more about the exploration of what is human while the "love triangle" aspect was more of a secondary theme. Don't get me wrong. There is a "love triangle" and it is an important part of the story but I felt like the "real" story was about the soul's experience with humanity.
The book is patiently told and picks up with more momentum towards the end. In my mind, this story was told in a similar fashion to LOTR: slow and steady but an amazing story nonetheless. Slow is not necessarily a bad thing: there were so many necessary experiences that needed to be expressed thoroughly in the story that it took time to really explain it well. When I finished the book, I didn't feel an overwhelming sense of emotion. Instead, this was a story that as I pondered on the complexity of the themes, on the character, on the plot, my emotions for the book grew more and more. I began to "see" more and more the ingenuity of the storyteller and the depth of the characters.
I really loved this story, and it has me thinking about it on a deeper level every moment of the day. For me, this ranks up with LOTR. It is a book that will compliment my library and that I will read over and over again. An amazing story and definitely worth reading.

Mr Darcy's Diary by Amanda Grange
I rated it 4 stars! It was quite a "quick read". I got it Saturday and finished it Monday morning.
Basically this book is Pride and Prejudice from Mr Darcy's point of view. What's not to like, right? Even though the book is in diary form, it wasn't quite as if Mr Darcy wrote it because it had conversations...and who would really write exact quotations, actions, reactions, feelings, etc on the things he wrote about. Maybe Mr Darcy. But I really enjoyed seeing things from Mr Darcy's side and seeing his love grow for Elizabeth.
It's nothing fancy, but entertaining enough for me. I really like it and could hardly put it down.
Oh and by the way...I'm not really a big fan of Colin Firth as Mr Darcy. Seriously. I'd prefer Keira as Elizabeth and Matthew as Mr Darcy. I'm all for it.

Softies
I just got this book from the library and I can't wait to make some of these cute little plush pals. This is for you crafty people!
Inside you can learn how to make things such as
- "double scoop" ice cream
- "ice cream sandwich"
- "lonely dollop" aka poo
- "pig/wolf" yes half pig half wolf.

Airman by Eoin Colfer
I'll be honest, I didn't exactly think I'd find this book that interesting. Creating some flying machine...ehh...doesn't exactly spark a big interest. But it was Eoin Colfer, and it's been getting good reviews, and I had checked it out from the library, whose due date is creeping up, so I decided to start it yesterday. And so far I'm enjoying it.

Northanger Abbey
Here's the first installment on YouTube to the Northanger Abbey movie (I think it's by Masterpiece.) Apparently it was on PBS in January, but we don't have a TV, so I didn't get to watch it. (Ok, we have a TV, it's just only hooked up to the DVD/VHS player.) There's 11 installments of the movie. I think it should be easy to find the next one when this one is finished.
