I rated it 4 stars...only because....(keep reading).
This book is a bit different from the movie. I thought the movie was great. And I thought this book was excellent as well! The movie is quite a condensed and changed version of the book. I understood much more about the story from reading this book. The only reason why I might have given it only 4 stars is that I just wanted more from Howl and Sophie at the end. More dialogue between them in the last couple pages. I also did enjoy some of Howl's funny comments to Sophie....Mrs. Nose.
*-----Possible spoiler if you haven't watched the movie-----*
The ending was fantastic. But, I want to learn more about Howl's love for Sophie and how it grew or came about....how it developed and when exactly. Hmph. Maybe I'd have to read it over again to catch onto some clues, but I wish the book would have elaborated on it in the end.

Yeah, I liked the book too...Entertaining and lots of good discussion topics but I haven't read it in a while so I can't really suggest any. You get more dialogue b/w Sophie and Howl in the sequels but I wouldn't call this book a "love story" per se.
Did you watch it with the Hearing Impaired Subtitles or the English Subtitles for the Japanese version? The dialogue is different and you get a better understanding of the movie with the latter version.
I think I will still read the "sequel" just to read it.
I like to watch movies in their original language! However, for one of Miyazaki (um is that even his name, I know I'm probably butchering it...and I'm not sure which movie it was...maybe Spirited Away...maybe HMC..maybe something else) I later watched some parts...maybe all?... with English language and with English subtitles. Um, that was weird. Not the same!
